Publication Research

I am begining to start work on the publication that is going to accompany they typefaces I have designed, and I thought it would be good to see what kind of type specimen books are already out their. I found it difficult finding images or pdfs of such things on the internet so i have found a bit of a hotch potch of different printed booklets. My target audience is going to be other designers. I think I can afford to use quite a minimal graphical style; a style that designers and visually literate people would appreciate.

I did find a few good examples of type specimen books which are the three sets of images directly below, all from lineto.com. They have a very clinical stripped down feel to them which is not really what I want to go for, but I think it is useful to see what they have included in their books.

Above: Type specimen for Simple from lineto.com

Type Specimen for Akkurat from lineto.com

Above is the type Specimen book from lineto.com for the typeface Replica. Its really useful to see what they have included in this book and how they have set it out.

The sets of images below are not from type specemin books but just from well designed small booklets, similar to what I hope to design.

Miha Ta

I came across these lookig at Miha Ta's photos stream on flickr

Blueprint

Its not the first time I seen it, but I came across this Blueprint today that had a really cool format. The dust Jacket is a fold out poster. It looks great and you get a bonus poster that you weren't expecting. I might use this format for a project in the future.

Paul Elliman

In the Crit on Wednesday someone left a post it note on my Environment / Typography / Environment brief saying that I should look at Paul Elliman. So I had a quick look on google images and found some of his work. I can definitely appreciate his style of work and I imagine in the 1980s when it was done it was pretty ground breaking.

However this isn't the direction I want to take my project in. I'm not really interested in making a grunge or distressed type face. I am more interested in making a sharp, graphical, modernist and consistant typeface.

Karel Martens

The same Post-it also mentioned Karel Martens. I had never really heard of him before or seen his work. I really like the way he creates letterforms and works with type.
