Banners

I came across this cool piece of design on Rydias photostream on flickr. A very nice use of banners I might use something like this on my Ted Baker brief.

Sigi Eggertsson

A designer called Sigi Eggertsson makes some really cool images, constructed in a modular way.

Ian Wright

I'm going to construct a large scale window display for my Ted Baker brief. I really like the way Ian Wright works, constructing a large image out of smaller elements.

Ted Baker

I have to admit that i don't know a lot about Ted Baker, the cloths are a bit out of my price range and not exactly my style, but the idea of working with a window display as my primary medium really inspired me. I had a bit of a look around to see what kind of stuff they have done in the past for their window displays.

Penguin Popular Classics

I found out who designed the penguin popular classics cover I was rude about a few post ago. It was David Pearson and apparently he's a bit of a bit shot. I've had a look around his website and, to be fair, he has some amazing work. A lot of gorgeous and really clever book covers like the ones below. Still, it doesn't mean I like that green.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Typography

I think Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was one of the first, if not the first book to experiment with typgraphy within the pages of the book, I thought that this would be a pretty cool starting point for a book cover design.

Penguin Book Covers

There is the kind of obvious route when designing a Penguin/Puffin book cover, to do something terribly modernist and simple. I think it is a bit cliched so I don't really want to go down this route, even though some of the designs are brilliant.

Puffin Book Cover - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

My next brief is going to be the Puffin Book Cover design competition for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. As with most of my project I rocked out on google images to see what else was out there.

To be honest I didn't find anything particulary interesting:

I like this one, Nice and simple with lovely typography

This is the current penguin classics one they have on Amazon. Its pretty boring and not all that child friendly.

This is the cover from 1898 edition of the book.

Puffin popular classics cover. Why on earth did they choose that green?

A bit of thought has gone into this one

Publication Research

I am begining to start work on the publication that is going to accompany they typefaces I have designed, and I thought it would be good to see what kind of type specimen books are already out their. I found it difficult finding images or pdfs of such things on the internet so i have found a bit of a hotch potch of different printed booklets. My target audience is going to be other designers. I think I can afford to use quite a minimal graphical style; a style that designers and visually literate people would appreciate.

I did find a few good examples of type specimen books which are the three sets of images directly below, all from lineto.com. They have a very clinical stripped down feel to them which is not really what I want to go for, but I think it is useful to see what they have included in their books.

Above: Type specimen for Simple from lineto.com

Type Specimen for Akkurat from lineto.com

Above is the type Specimen book from lineto.com for the typeface Replica. Its really useful to see what they have included in this book and how they have set it out.

The sets of images below are not from type specemin books but just from well designed small booklets, similar to what I hope to design.
