Design Context Final Piece

This is my finished design context publication. Overall I pretty happy with it. I'm really happy with how it looks; I spent a lot of time perfecting the typography and layouts and I think it paid off. I am happy with the content, I maybe tried to cover too much ground with it. The only the I would like to do differently would be to add slightly more of my own written input.

Dalton Maag

Dalton Maag have been sending out a lovely set of type specimens. It took me a while to track down some images of them on the internet. But they are really nice and its great to see how other people have displayed a typeface to its best and also the synergy between the fonts and the print and production techniques which really make the typefaces stand out.

Unit Editions

This is a really nice publication from Unit Editions. I like how the band contains all the information about the book and the the cover itself is free to show off a big typographic pattern. I want to do something similar with my type specimen mailshot package.

Joe showed me this great book called Typeface as Program by ECAL University of Art and Design Lausanne.

It is particularly interesting not because of its specific subject matter, which is about how computer programs can be used to make typefaces but more because of the way the typefaces are presented.

Lots of really playful and innovative ways have of displaying them have been used to show off the letter forms. One section is of a whole set of posters that have been photographed and displayed as spreads.

Design context Final Changes

One of the main critisism from our last crit was about the cover of my design context. I had a bit of a brainstorm, and came up with a new idea for the cover that had an inner and out section, the inner section being a very simple typographic composition and the outer section having all the information on it such as contents my name and the title.

I think this reflects the books concern with processes and materials. I also think it is simpler and more enganging.


























Above you can see I experimented with a few coloured paper stocks for the outer cover.













I settled on red i think it looks the most authoritative and eye catching.













Inside some of the spreads have changed, but not drastically.













I've added some facts about each of the typefaces, which helps to explain why they are relevant to each of the eras I am covering.













To the digital type section I added some information about Insignia, a typeface designed by Neville Brody.

Design Context Amendments

I printed out a black and white mock up of my design context mainly to check for typos, see how it all held together and so I could get some feedback in the crit.

I marked it up to remind me of the mistakes and things I needed to change. There wasn't anything major, some of the spreads have been moved around slightly and lots of typos have been corrected.

One of the main criticism from the crit was that the cover was a bit complacted and confusing so that is something I have changed.

Art is Hard

Jay Cover from Nous Vous very kindly sent me a high resolution image of his Art is Hard poster today. Which means I can put a full bleed image in his spread.

Brownstone

I just saw this new font on typography served its quite similar to my grande fete font. It would be interesting to do some typographic ornaments to go with the typeface.
