End of year Show Identity

Some of the things I have been looking at in relation to my proposal for the end of year show identity. Mostly from ffffound, I tried to track down the actual site for some of the images but ended up on a page that changed the size of my browser window and told me I had a virus so I gave up.

The two above are from ptarmak I seem to be really influenced by this style of retro typography at the moment. I think it has a really strong aesthetic, its really versatile and I love the rigour that goes into it; to get it right everything has to be really considered.

The two above are from ffffound, I didn't manage to find out the real artists/designer. Again they have a really nice retro aesthetic but all typographically very rigorous. I'm not entirely sure why I think this is appropriate for the end of show identity, I suppose it is simply a look that is very 'in' at the moment and I think applying it to the end of year show identity will give it a very contemporary up to date feel which is exactly what you want to communicate about an end of year show that is displaying work from lots of fresh new creatives. It also has reliable, authoratative quality to it which is something that is important to communicate about Leeds College of Art.

The above 5 images are from Grainedit. One of my initial ideas for the end of year show identity was to base it around a stylised map of the area around college. I think these maps heve been done in a really interesting way. A map is usually a very dry thing containing lots of detail and information, I like the idea of making one that contains the same level of detail and information but present it in a creative, fun way.

I couldn't track down where the above image was from, but its a very nice piece of typography and very nicely photographed and displayed.

Last Years End of Year Show

This is last years show identity designed by Merlin mason. I think its pretty nice. Its really useful to look at in terms of working out the content and how it is layed out.

The overall design is functional, it looks nice and displays the information well. But I don't really think it says anything particulay exciting about the college and is the fat paintbrush and all the messy dripping paint really the image we want to portray?

Presenting Website Designs

I am going to design the look of a website for my sisters Artwork, because I'm not actually going to build a functioning website I think the way that it is presnted and mocked up is very important so I have been looking at the ways in which some design studios do it.

Mostly they just put the picture of the website up in a typivcal browser, which isn't very creative. I think Fridge creative and Effektive were the only ones I came across that mocked up a picture of a computer with the website displayed on it. I think this looks a bit more interesting and gives the design more context.

Spin Design

Mind Design

Fridge Creative

Tomorrow Studio

Blast Design

Effektive Design does a really nice job of presenting websites by making an animated gif of the website on a computer flicking through some of the pages, as well as showing some of the pages individuelly in a browser window.

BMX T-Shirts

I'm going to designa T-shirt as part of the stalled brief so I thought i would look at some of the T-shirts available on the AlansBMX mail order website. Some of them are quite nice but they are not generally that exciting.

Design Projects

Joe suggested to me the idea of designing a website for my sister's artwork. I could contuine the very simple minimal style that i have developed for her postrer and bruchure. I think it would be a good way to extend the project and I wouldn't have to actually build the site I could simply design it and mock it up.

Joe suggest I look at design project website for a good example of a really simple minimal design.

Crispin Finn

Crispin Finn make some gorgeous work, they have quite a kitsch style. i think their influence is fairly obvious in my YTD project.

Design Context Proposal

I've re-written my design context now to simply focus on the history of modern typography. I've simplified it down, I think this will allow me to give much more care and attention to the way it's produced, relating the content to the production method.
